A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

SDBC Logo Remember, SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the new coalition website at http://sdbikecoalition.org.

Safety tip of the week: When using a turn signal, especially to merge left across multiple lanes of fast/busy traffic, use a clear and assertive arm signal. If you hold your arm straight out, parallel to the ground, rather than angling down at 45 degrees, you're much more likely to grab the attention, and get the cooperation, of motorists. They'll actually slow down to let you in, especially if you turn your head to look back at them too. Of course using a turn signal does not give you the right of way. Maintain course until they yield, or there is a gap, before moving over.

Other Items Of Interest

The following items are not sponsored or endorsed by SDBC but may be of interest to the general membership.

2015 Free Bicycle Traffic Skills Course

Are you a "D" rider?  An "A" rider?  Or between the two?  This free course should be taken by everyone who rides a bike on public streets.  Everyone!  This course could save your life.

My wife Beth and I have been riding and racing with SDBC for 21 years and took this course a few months ago.  We feel safer riding on the road and learned the most current rules of the road.  This course is well worth a few hours of your time.

Taught by our local cycling hero Pete Penseyres (former record holder of RAAM)  and the Oceanside bicycle coordinator Howard LaGrange.

Be sure to check our website and social media pages for more information.

You may notice that the format of the weekly update has changed. The results for SDBC racers that placed in the top ten during past week will be featured at the begining of the update. The full list of race results for the past 60 days will be further down as usual. Following the current race results will be upcoming events and items of interest. Both columns will be utilized for all content following the sponsor logos on the left - hopefully this will help to prevent scrolling for half a day to get to the classifieds. You DO look at the classifieds don't you?

We have several volunteer opportunities coming up so please consider helping out at one of these events:

SDBC Club Night at UC Cyclery
SDBCUC Cyclery

SAVE THE DATE! MONDAY MARCH 16, 2015

UC Cyclery will offer its biggest SDBC Discounts on "Club Night" Monday, March 16th between 6 and 8 PM.

We always have fun when Dave and his crew roll out the red carpet for SDBC! The club provides the beer and pizza, and Dave offers great discounts and in-store specials.  If you have not renewed your membership – you will be able to on site!

Show your 2015 SDBC Membership Card on UC Cyclery Club Night and get these discounts:

  • 20% off on parts and accessories (normally it's 10%)
  • 10% off on bikes and Garmin products.

2015 SDBC membership card required for discounts.

Normally, Garmin products are excluded from discounting, and there is a $100 limit on bike discounts. All that changes on Club Night. Garmin is in, and the $100 limit is gone.  So if you buy a $3,000 bike on Club Night you get a $300 discount.

Club Night discounts are the deepest ones offered all year by UCC to SDBC members. Don't miss out!

Volunteers are needed for the SDBC Club Night at UC Cyclery - March 16th!
Please sign up here: https://www.volunteersignup.org/EYB7Y (info about time and job is on the sign up page) or check out the volunteer page online at http://sdbc.org/volunteer/
