MLK ride with Major Taylor

To celebrate the Martin Luther King holiday, we will be riding with members of the Major Taylor cycling club on their holiday ride to Disneyland. Please join us!

This ride rolls at 0800A from the parking lot of Buffalo Hot Wings 736 Del Amo Blvd, Carson, CA 90746.

The group will work to stay together as a whole until after a photo stop at Disneyland from there different groups will form up based on the speed of the riders. There are always a few riders keeping a chill D3/4 pace the whole ride.

So if you are up to a casual 40ish mile roll through the streets of LA or maybe you might want come and hang with the Big Dawgs and maybe see if SDBC can raise the bar a notch this ride will be a blast.”

Click here for the scheduled strava route.

About Marshall ‘Major’ Taylor

As the 1800’s were coming to a close the cycling craze was at its height and so was bicycle racing, it was by far the most popular spectator sport in America. The rider who race promoters knew would draw the biggest crowds and fill arenas such as Madison Square Garden to capacity was The Fastest Man in the World, The Worchester Whirlwind, the highest grossing professional athlete of his time, Marshall W. ‘Major’ Taylor!

Major Taylor was born November, 1878 and started racing at a young age winning his first race at 12. He turned pro at age 18 and by 20 became the second black athlete to win a world championship in any sport, winning the Men’s sprint. Major Taylor set numerous world records throughout his professional career, the one-mile sprint from a standing start at 1:41 in 1898 would stand for 28 years. In October 1909 he rode and won his last professional race in Roanne, France, a match race against French world champion Charles Dupre after which he retired in 1910 at age 32.

In the post war years after WWI and with the mass production of the automobile the bicycle craze and fascination with bicycle racing began to wane and it wasn’t long before his achievements were lost to time. In 1979 the first Major Taylor Cycling Club was formed in Columbus, Ohio. With a renewed interest in his legacy and memory serving to popularize cycling among black athletes and fans of Major Taylor, countless clubs have sprung up across the nation from New York to California.
